Seeking an Executive Director to Join Upstream Watch

At Upstream Watch, our mission is to protect and restore the waters of Penobscot Bay. We are eager to hire a visionary leader who shares our conviction that the sustained prosperity and cultural wellbeing of the Penobscot Bay's coastal communities depends on prioritizing marine and freshwater ecosystem protection, restoration and the enforcement of existing environmental laws to promote the ecological health and restoration of the Bay and watershed.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced executive to help grow a dynamic, independent organization committed to marine and freshwater ecosystem restoration, local fishing, regenerative aquaculture, environmental law enforcement and overall coastal community prosperity.

The Executive Director will lead the execution of a restoration vision that fully regenerates, rewilds and enforces the protection of the Penobscot Bay and watershed. The Executive Director will report to Upstream Watch’s Board Director, Amy Grant, and will coordinate a collaborative that will include fishing people, tribal members, local governments, organizations, scientists, and citizenry in furtherance of this goal.

Specific Duties

The Executive Director will:

  • Be responsible for supporting all lawsuits currently underway concerning Nordic Aquafarms. This will include supporting the legal team in their efforts and overseeing the organization of all legal and permit files.

  • Be responsible for executing and managing all fundraising activities, including grant writing, donor relations, outreach to supporters and board development.

  • Be responsible for managing the administration of the organization, volunteers and additional staff as hired.

  • Work with the board to create a vision and strategic plan for the restoration and enforced protection of Penobscot Bay.

  • Be responsible for organizing and executing press releases, social media and other outreach efforts highlighting our several lawsuits concerning Nordic Aquafarms, as well as the restoration, enforcement and education vision. This will include website management.

  • Engage organizations, tribes, businesses and individuals in existing coalitions that are aligned with our mission, and collaborate with others to create a local restoration and enforcement coalition.
